The National Juried Show, May 17-21, 2001 in Nanaimo was a great success thanks to Val Ursulak and her volunteer team. A job well done! The opening night was very entertaining. The Passion Purples Quilt Olympic team masterfully performed a few block presentations, which included the nine-patch, grandmother’s flower garden, and a variation of a star pattern. They may have had some difficulty on the landscape of the historical Coast Bastion, but this didn’t seem to bother the audience. Following the entertainment, the ribbon cutting ceremony opened the door to a wonderful display of artistic talent. Our judges were Kay Phillips, Lorraine Stangness and Jim Wilford. They really had their work cut out for them, and they spent considerable time deliberating over their choices. Their reputations for excellence and knowledge clearly showed with the announcement of their selected winners.

We must not forget to mention the Joseph H. McMurdie awards (sponsored by the CQA/ACC) chosen by Paulette Eccleston, Lara Bowditch and Grace Ballard, directors of the Board. Star Bright by Susan Duffield won the Joseph H. McMurdie Workmanship Award for piecing. The Joseph H. McMurdie Award for Appliqué was won by Sandy Simmelink -Her Time is in My Time 1880-2000. There were 67 pieces accepted from the more than 150 entries through a jurying process conducted by Maria Stow (Jury Coordinator), and selected by Jurors, Barbara Robson, Meredith Annette and Ann Munro, all of Halifax-Dartmouth area, Nova Scotia. Congratulations to all those whose quilts were juried into the show, that in itself is a significant accomplishment. The show was well attended by thousands of viewers. Members of the local community, as well as visitors to the island from across Canada, Japan and England enjoyed the experience of Quilt BC 2001. The Beban Park Recreation Center of Nanaimo proved to be a great facility. Congratulations to all our winners, and to those who were accepted to show at NJS 2001 held in conjunction with Quilt BC 2001 in May. It was a great weekend and everyone seemed to enjoy the show, the beautiful weather, and the city of Nanaimo. I look forward to our time together in Edmonton for Quilt Canada 2002.
